Office space: The City

Big buildings, big offices, big business, big prices. Welcome to the City.

London’s financial heart, also known as ‘The Square Mile’, dates back to the City’s earliest incarnation as the Roman Londinium. Through everything from great fires to crippling recessions, it has retained its status as the most important patch of land in the country.

It’s now, as it has been for decades, where you’ll find many of the world’s biggest financial and legal institutions, housed in the glass and steel monoliths of the City.

If you’re a business with aspirations to make it big, particularly in the financial sector, this is the place to let office space. It’s a work-hard, play-hard business destination that could be perfect for your enterprise. Want to learn more? Read on.

Office Rental: Shared, serviced and leased options

You’ll find a good number of leased offices in the City. These are generally the most popular office rental option. Not least because you get your own space to design and maintain. This is something that can have a real boost on the impression your business gives out; a key bonus.

Do bear in mind the long-term contracts that come with these rentals can be inflexible and managing an entire space can be a lot to take on. While renting offices in this manner is generally the cheapest option, the City is one of the most expensive locations in the world; not always ideal for a small business.

Obviously, with one of London’s premier locations, comes premier office space; executive serviced offices are abundant; a couple of our favourite options are WeWork Aldate or Regus Broadgate Circle. These generally offer rooms to rent on flexible rolling month-to-month contracts. They include all utility fees and offer many (if not all, or even more) of the following:

  • Executive meeting rooms
  • Business support
  • Reception and postal services
  • IT/tech support

These ‘business centres’ do come at the highest cost-per-person of any type of office space. However, if you’ve got good cash reserves but don’t have the time/resources to manage a property, they’re a particularly viable option.

There are also a few shared offices available to rent. These, where you rent cheap desk space in another company’s office, offer a more limited package (usually a desk, chair and all utilities included). They’re still super-flexible and they usually come at a price that’s much lower than serviced office space. However these are not too common in the City. So, if you like the sound of a shared office lease, you might want to try more creative hotspots such as Clerkenwell, Soho or Shoreditch where this particular desk rental option is abundant.

Office life in the City

Getting in (and out)

Just as all roads lead to Rome, all tube lines lead to the City. There are 10 tube stops in the Square Mile, that give you access to seven tube lines. This puts King’s Cross and St Pancras mainline stations within a few stops. Another of London’s busiest rail hubs, Liverpool Street, is in the City itself.

Coffee time

So, you’re well catered for in the transport department, but what if you need a quick coffee once you have arrived? Well, you won’t go far wrong with Dose Espresso near Barbican (fittingly they use Square Mile Coffee Beans) or the bustling Taylor St Baristas.

Lunch breaks

At lunctime you’re equally spoilt for choice. The Duck and Waffle is a great location for a business lunch up in the clouds.

In a part of London where prices soar like the buildings value lunches are a little harder to come by, but Nusa do a pretty mean soup.

Quick post-work pint?

Fancy a drink after work? Check out the Skylounge at the Doubletree Hilton for unbeatable views across London, as you sip cocktails on this 12th floor bar.

If you’ve got a head for even greater heights then out the soaring Vertigo 42. In the mood for something a bit more down to earth? Try the Centre Page or Fleet Street’s historic Ye Old Cheshire Cheese.
