Birkenhead has a famous history as a seaport, it became one of England’s premier shipbuilding towns in the 1800s and despite the demise of Cammell Laird in 2001 it is still a major part if its economy today. Its proximity to Liverpool has also made it a key industrial centre, seeing its population swell to almost 150,000 by 1950.
Today Birkenhead has a population closer to half that, and an unemployment rate well above the national average, but a project known as ‘wirral Waters’ hopes to change all that.
