Explore Ashton-under-Lyne’s old town centre and you’ll find a wealth of original Victorian buildings, which are protected as a conservation area by local Tameside council. There are all the high street names you’d expect to find here, but also a six-day outdoor market originating in Mediaeval times, a flea market on weekdays and a farmer’s market that is the largest in the region. The 13,000 square metre Ashton Arcades shopping centre also serves the area, while Ashton Leisure Park is a restaurant and leisure complex just west of the town centre, with a 14-screen and Imax cinema and a bowling alley.
There’s plenty of development going on here. Ashton Market Hall has seen £15m in renovation in recent years, while Tameside Hospital is being revamped and a new golf course has been planned.
Local cultural attractions include the museum of the Manchester Regiment located in the Grade II-listed Ashton Town Hall, and the Portland Basin heritage centre and museum, celebrating life on the old Ashton canal. There are five parks in Ashton, three of which have won Green Flag Awards.
