Although it has some 30,000 residents and a growing number of small to medium sized businesses, Harpenden retains a village feel, with its tree-lined high street, period cottages and abundant parks and commons. Despite its growth, the town maintains its smaller, independent status while presenting a full range of shops and services. In contrast, it is also a thriving commuter town, made possible by excellent transport links that allow businesses to enjoy all the advantages of being so close to the city. Central London is just a quick train ride away. Harpenden railway station is served by Thameslink on a fast rail link to London St Pancras International (Harpenden to St Pancras International in 23 minutes). From London trains continue south to Brighton. The M1, a north–south motorway connecting London to Leeds, is also nearby. Junction 10 provides access to Luton airport, which is less than five miles away and is a gateway to a range of European city destinations and beyond.

As it is located just outside London, it is perhaps expected that property prices aren’t cheap. But Harpenden would be less expensive than London itself while offering several advantages: easy access to London, great opportunities for SMEs, and a real community feel. What’s more, it is surrounded by green spaces. From the shops in the town centre, Harpenden Common stretches for more than a mile to the south.
